Works both with and without an article (a, an, or the),in most cases the is used.

(the water, the sugar, the rice)


Works with expressions such as (some, any, enough, this, that, and much)

(some water, enough rice, some sugar)


Do NOT work with expressions such as (these, those, every, each, either, or neither).

(those rice, every sugar, each water)
