MHApps BPD – Hospital For BPD EUPD – Limited Role And Poor Outcome
-
-
Family members and distressed individuals with BPD / EUPD often seek admission to hospital seeing it as a safe environment but hospital admission tends have a somewhat limited role in BPD / EUPD treatment. Hospital admission tends to reinforce a misapprehension that the individual with BPD / EUPD is incapacitated and this creates an expectation that the responsibility for recovery lies with those providing care to bring this about, thereby diminishing an individual developing a sense of personal responsibility and actively engaging in their recovery. The hospital environment can also be invalidating, lead to an increase in regressed and child-like behaviours and can re-traumatise a vulnerable individual. Research evidence tells us that admitting somebody with BPD / EUPD into hospital when they are experiencing suicidal thoughts can worsen the condition and its outcome.
