Suicide is one of the most tragic results of any mental distress. Self harming behaviour and suicide attempts are central to BPD / EUPD with a fatal outcome for a small percentage of people. It is often difficult to predict those likely to come to serious harm. Many struggling with BPD / EUPD are chronically suicidal as it has become a way of adapting to life with self harm serving to alleviate surges of overwhelming intense emotion. This is not necessarily seen as harmful by the individual them self.
Deliberate self-harming behaviours in BPD / EUPD do not appear to stem from a desire to die but rather serve to regulate emotions by distraction by inflicting pain especially if the individual experiences deep self loathing. Most feel very ashamed of this behaviour and tend as much as possible to conceal it from others.
