بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ اقْتَرَبَتِ السَّاعَةُ وَانشَقَّ الْقَمَرُ[1]

Iqtarabati alssaAAatu wainshaqqa alqamaru

L'Heure approche et la Lune s'est fendue.

The Hour (of Judgment) is nigh, and the moon is cleft asunder.

وَإِن يَرَوْا۟ ءَايَةً يُعْرِضُوا۟ وَيَقُولُوا۟ سِحْرٌ مُّسْتَمِرٌّ[2]

Wain yaraw ayatan yuAAridoo wayaqooloo sihrun mustamirrun

Et s'ils voient un prodige, ils s'en détournent et disent: «Une magie persistante».

But if they see a Sign, they turn away, and say, "This is (but) transient magic."

وَكَذَّبُوا۟ وَاتَّبَعُوٓا۟ أَهْوَآءَهُمْ ۚ وَكُلُّ أَمْرٍ مُّسْتَقِرٌّ[3]

Wakaththaboo waittabaAAoo ahwaahum wakullu amrin mustaqirrun

Et ils [le] traitent de mensonge et suivent leurs propres impulsions, or chaque chose arrivera à son terme [et son but].

They reject (the warning) and follow their (own) lusts but every matter has its appointed time.

وَلَقَدْ جَآءَهُم مِّنَ الْأَنۢبَآءِ مَا فِيهِ مُزْدَجَرٌ[4]

Walaqad jaahum mina alanbai ma feehi muzdajarun

Ils ont pourtant reçu comme nouvelles de quoi les empêcher (du mal);

There have already come to them Recitals wherein there is (enough) to check (them),

حِكْمَةٌۢ بَٰلِغَةٌ ۖ فَمَا تُغْنِ النُّذُرُ[5]

Hikmatun balighatun fama tughnee alnnuthuru

[Cela est] une sagesse parfaite. Mais les avertissements ne [leur] servent à rien.

Mature wisdom;- but (the preaching of) Warners profits them not.

فَتَوَلَّ عَنْهُمْ ۘ يَوْمَ يَدْعُ الدَّاعِ إِلَىٰ شَىْءٍ نُّكُرٍ[6]

Fatawalla AAanhum yawma yadAAu alddaAAi ila shayin nukurin

Détourne-toi d'eux. Le jour où l'appeleur appellera vers une chose affreuse,

Therefore, (O Prophet,) turn away from them. The Day that the Caller will call (them) to a terrible affair,

خُشَّعًا أَبْصَٰرُهُمْ يَخْرُجُونَ مِنَ الْأَجْدَاثِ كَأَنَّهُمْ جَرَادٌ مُّنتَشِرٌ[7]

KhushshaAAan absaruhum yakhrujoona mina alajdathi kaannahum jaradun muntashirun

les regards baissés, ils sortiront des tombes comme des sauterelles éparpillées,

They will come forth,- their eyes humbled - from (their) graves, (torpid) like locusts scattered abroad,

مُّهْطِعِينَ إِلَى الدَّاعِ ۖ يَقُولُ الْكَٰفِرُونَ هَٰذَا يَوْمٌ عَسِرٌ[8]

MuhtiAAeena ila alddaAAi yaqoolu alkafiroona hatha yawmun AAasirun

courant, le cou tendu, vers l'appeleur. Les mécréants diront: «Voilà un jour difficile».

Hastening, with eyes transfixed, towards the Caller!- "Hard is this Day!", the Unbelievers will say.

۞ كَذَّبَتْ قَبْلَهُمْ قَوْمُ نُوحٍ فَكَذَّبُوا۟ عَبْدَنَا وَقَالُوا۟ مَجْنُونٌ وَازْدُجِرَ[9]

Kaththabat qablahum qawmu noohin fakaththaboo AAabdana waqaloo majnoonun waizdujira

Avant eux, le peuple de Noé avait crié au mensonge. Ils traitèrent Notre serviteur de menteur et dirent: «C'est un possédé!» et il fut repoussé.

Before them the People of Noah rejected (their messenger): they rejected Our servant, and said, "Here is one possessed!", and he was driven out.

فَدَعَا رَبَّهُۥٓ أَنِّى مَغْلُوبٌ فَانتَصِرْ[10]

FadaAAa rabbahu annee maghloobun faintasir

Il invoqua donc son Seigneur: «Moi, je suis vaincu. Fais triompher (Ta cause)».

Then he called on his Lord: "I am one overcome: do Thou then help (me)!"

فَفَتَحْنَآ أَبْوَٰبَ السَّمَآءِ بِمَآءٍ مُّنْهَمِرٍ[11]

Fafatahna abwaba alssamai bimain munhamirin

Nous ouvrîmes alors les portes du ciel à une eau torrentielle,

So We opened the gates of heaven, with water pouring forth.

وَفَجَّرْنَا الْأَرْضَ عُيُونًا فَالْتَقَى الْمَآءُ عَلَىٰٓ أَمْرٍ قَدْ قُدِرَ[12]

Wafajjarna alarda AAuyoonan failtaqa almao AAala amrin qad qudira

et fîmes jaillir la terre en sources. Les eaux se rencontrèrent d'après un ordre qui était déjà décrété dans une chose [faite].

And We caused the earth to gush forth with springs, so the waters met (and rose) to the extent decreed.

وَحَمَلْنَٰهُ عَلَىٰ ذَاتِ أَلْوَٰحٍ وَدُسُرٍ[13]

Wahamalnahu AAala thati alwahin wadusurin

Et Nous le portâmes sur un objet [fait] de planches et de clous [l'arche],

But We bore him on an (Ark) made of broad planks and caulked with palm-fibre:

تَجْرِى بِأَعْيُنِنَا جَزَآءً لِّمَن كَانَ كُفِرَ[14]

Tajree biaAAyunina jazaan liman kana kufira

voguant sous Nos yeux: récompense pour celui qu'on avait renié [Noé].

She floats under our eyes (and care): a recompense to one who had been rejected (with scorn)!

وَلَقَد تَّرَكْنَٰهَآ ءَايَةً فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍ[15]

Walaqad taraknaha ayatan fahal min muddakirin

Et Nous la laissâmes, comme un signe [d'avertissement]. Y a-t-il quelqu'un pour réfléchir?

And We have left this as a Sign (for all time): then is there any that will receive admonition?

فَكَيْفَ كَانَ عَذَابِى وَنُذُرِ[16]

Fakayfa kana AAathabee wanuthuri

Comment furent Mon châtiment et Mes avertissements?

But how (terrible) was My Penalty and My Warning?

وَلَقَدْ يَسَّرْنَا الْقُرْءَانَ لِلذِّكْرِ فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍ[17]

Walaqad yassarna alqurana lilththikri fahal min muddakirin

En effet, Nous avons rendu le Coran facile pour la méditation. Y a-t-il quelqu'un pour réfléchir?

And We have indeed made the Qur'an easy to understand and remember: then is there any that will receive admonition?

كَذَّبَتْ عَادٌ فَكَيْفَ كَانَ عَذَابِى وَنُذُرِ[18]

Kaththabat AAadun fakayfa kana AAathabee wanuthuri

Les 'Aad ont traité de menteur (leur Messager). Comment furent Mon châtiment et Mes avertissements?

The 'Ad (people) (too) rejected (Truth): then how terrible was My Penalty and My Warning?

إِنَّآ أَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ رِيحًا صَرْصَرًا فِى يَوْمِ نَحْسٍ مُّسْتَمِرٍّ[19]

Inna arsalna AAalayhim reehan sarsaran fee yawmi nahsin mustamirrin

Nous avons envoyé contre eux un vent violent et glacial, en un jour néfaste et interminable;

For We sent against them a furious wind, on a Day of violent Disaster,

تَنزِعُ النَّاسَ كَأَنَّهُمْ أَعْجَازُ نَخْلٍ مُّنقَعِرٍ[20]

TanziAAu alnnasa kaannahum aAAjazu nakhlin munqaAAirin

il arrachait les gens comme des souches de palmiers déracinés.

Plucking out men as if they were roots of palm-trees torn up (from the ground).

فَكَيْفَ كَانَ عَذَابِى وَنُذُرِ[21]

Fakayfa kana AAathabee wanuthuri

Comment furent Mon châtiment et Mes avertissements?

Yea, how (terrible) was My Penalty and My Warning!

وَلَقَدْ يَسَّرْنَا الْقُرْءَانَ لِلذِّكْرِ فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍ[22]

Walaqad yassarna alqurana lilththikri fahal min muddakirin

En effet, Nous avons rendu le Coran facile pour la méditation. Y a-t-il quelqu'un pour réfléchir?

But We have indeed made the Qur'an easy to understand and remember: then is there any that will receive admonition?

كَذَّبَتْ ثَمُودُ بِالنُّذُرِ[23]

Kaththabat thamoodu bialnnuthuri

Les Thamûd ont traité de mensonges les avertissements.

The Thamud (also) rejected (their) Warners.

فَقَالُوٓا۟ أَبَشَرًا مِّنَّا وَٰحِدًا نَّتَّبِعُهُۥٓ إِنَّآ إِذًا لَّفِى ضَلَٰلٍ وَسُعُرٍ[24]

Faqaloo abasharan minna wahidan nattabiAAuhu inna ithan lafee dalalin wasuAAurin

Ils dirent: «Allons-nous suivre un seul homme (Sâlih) d'entre nous-mêmes? Nous serions alors dans l'égarement et la folie.

For they said: "What! a man! a Solitary one from among ourselves! shall we follow such a one? Truly should we then be straying in mind, and mad!

أَءُلْقِىَ الذِّكْرُ عَلَيْهِ مِنۢ بَيْنِنَا بَلْ هُوَ كَذَّابٌ أَشِرٌ[25]

Aolqiya alththikru AAalayhi min baynina bal huwa kaththabun ashirun

Est-ce que le message a été envoyé à Lui à l'exception de nous tous? C'est plutôt un grand menteur, plein de prétention et d'orgueil».

"Is it that the Message is sent to him, of all people amongst us? Nay, he is a liar, an insolent one!"

سَيَعْلَمُونَ غَدًا مَّنِ الْكَذَّابُ الْأَشِرُ[26]

SayaAAlamoona ghadan mani alkaththabu alashiru

Demain, ils sauront qui est le grand menteur plein de prétention et d'orgueil.

Ah! they will know on the morrow, which is the liar, the insolent one!

إِنَّا مُرْسِلُوا۟ النَّاقَةِ فِتْنَةً لَّهُمْ فَارْتَقِبْهُمْ وَاصْطَبِرْ[27]

Inna mursiloo alnnaqati fitnatan lahum fairtaqibhum waistabir

Nous leur enverrons la chamelle, comme épreuve. Surveille-les donc et sois patient.

For We will send the she-camel by way of trial for them. So watch them, (O Salih), and possess thyself in patience!

وَنَبِّئْهُمْ أَنَّ الْمَآءَ قِسْمَةٌۢ بَيْنَهُمْ ۖ كُلُّ شِرْبٍ مُّحْتَضَرٌ[28]

Wanabbihum anna almaa qismatun baynahum kullu shirbin muhtadarun

Et informe-les que l'eau sera en partage entre eux [et la chamelle]; chacun boira à son tour.

And tell them that the water is to be divided between them: Each one's right to drink being brought forward (by suitable turns).

فَنَادَوْا۟ صَاحِبَهُمْ فَتَعَاطَىٰ فَعَقَرَ[29]

Fanadaw sahibahum fataAAata faAAaqara

Puis ils appelèrent leur camarade qui prit [son épée] et [la] tua.

But they called to their companion, and he took a sword in hand, and hamstrung (her).

فَكَيْفَ كَانَ عَذَابِى وَنُذُرِ[30]

Fakayfa kana AAathabee wanuthuri

Comment furent donc Mon châtiment et Mes avertissements?

Ah! how (terrible) was My Penalty and My Warning!

إِنَّآ أَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ صَيْحَةً وَٰحِدَةً فَكَانُوا۟ كَهَشِيمِ الْمُحْتَظِرِ[31]

Inna arsalna AAalayhim sayhatan wahidatan fakanoo kahasheemi almuhtathiri

Nous lachâmes sur eux un seul Cri, et voilà qu'ils furent réduits à l'état de paille d'étable.

For We sent against them a single Mighty Blast, and they became like the dry stubble used by one who pens cattle.

وَلَقَدْ يَسَّرْنَا الْقُرْءَانَ لِلذِّكْرِ فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍ[32]

Walaqad yassarna alqurana lilththikri fahal min muddakirin

Et vraiment, Nous avons rendu le Coran facile pour la méditation. Y a-t-il quelqu'un pour réfléchir?

And We have indeed made the Qur'an easy to understand and remember: then is there any that will receive admonition?

كَذَّبَتْ قَوْمُ لُوطٍۭ بِالنُّذُرِ[33]

Kaththabat qawmu lootin bialnnuthuri

Le peuple de Lot traita de mensonges les avertissements.

The people of Lut rejected (his) warning.

إِنَّآ أَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ حَاصِبًا إِلَّآ ءَالَ لُوطٍ ۖ نَّجَّيْنَٰهُم بِسَحَرٍ[34]

Inna arsalna AAalayhim hasiban illa ala lootin najjaynahum bisaharin

Nous lachâmes sur eux un ouragan, excepté la famille de Lot que Nous sauvâmes avant l'aube,

We sent against them a violent Tornado with showers of stones, (which destroyed them), except Lut's household: them We delivered by early Dawn,-

نِّعْمَةً مِّنْ عِندِنَا ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ نَجْزِى مَن شَكَرَ[35]

NiAAmatan min AAindina kathalika najzee man shakara

à titre de bienfait de Notre part: ainsi récompensons-Nous celui qui est reconnaissant.

As a Grace from Us: thus do We reward those who give thanks.

وَلَقَدْ أَنذَرَهُم بَطْشَتَنَا فَتَمَارَوْا۟ بِالنُّذُرِ[36]

Walaqad antharahum batshatana fatamaraw bialnnuthuri

Il les avait pourtant avertis de Nos représailles. Mais ils mirent les avertissements en doute.

And (Lut) did warn them of Our Punishment, but they disputed about the Warning.

وَلَقَدْ رَٰوَدُوهُ عَن ضَيْفِهِۦ فَطَمَسْنَآ أَعْيُنَهُمْ فَذُوقُوا۟ عَذَابِى وَنُذُرِ[37]

Walaqad rawadoohu AAan dayfihi fatamasna aAAyunahum fathooqoo AAathabee wanuthuri

En effet, ils voulaient séduire ses hôtes. Nous aveuglâmes leurs yeux «Goûtez donc Mon châtiment et Mes avertissements».

And they even sought to snatch away his guests from him, but We blinded their eyes. (They heard:) "Now taste ye My Wrath and My Warning."

وَلَقَدْ صَبَّحَهُم بُكْرَةً عَذَابٌ مُّسْتَقِرٌّ[38]

Walaqad sabbahahum bukratan AAathabun mustaqirrun

En effet, au petit matin, un châtiment persistant les surprit.

Early on the morrow an abiding Punishment seized them:

فَذُوقُوا۟ عَذَابِى وَنُذُرِ[39]

Fathooqoo AAathabee wanuthuri

Goûtez donc Mon châtiment et Mes avertissements.

"So taste ye My Wrath and My Warning."

وَلَقَدْ يَسَّرْنَا الْقُرْءَانَ لِلذِّكْرِ فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍ[40]

Walaqad yassarna alqurana lilththikri fahal min muddakirin

Et vraiment, Nous avons rendu le Coran facile pour la méditation. Y a-t-il quelqu'un pour réfléchir?

And We have indeed made the Qur'an easy to understand and remember: then is there any that will receive admonition?

وَلَقَدْ جَآءَ ءَالَ فِرْعَوْنَ النُّذُرُ[41]

Walaqad jaa ala firAAawna alnnuthuru

Les avertissements vinrent certes, aux gens de Pharaon.

To the People of Pharaoh, too, aforetime, came Warners (from Allah).

كَذَّبُوا۟ بِـَٔايَٰتِنَا كُلِّهَا فَأَخَذْنَٰهُمْ أَخْذَ عَزِيزٍ مُّقْتَدِرٍ[42]

Kaththaboo biayatina kulliha faakhathnahum akhtha AAazeezin muqtadirin

Ils traitèrent de mensonges tous Nos prodiges. Nous les saisîmes donc, de la saisie d'un Puissant Omnipotent.

The (people) rejected all Our Signs; but We seized them with such Penalty (as comes) from One Exalted in Power, able to carry out His Will.

أَكُفَّارُكُمْ خَيْرٌ مِّنْ أُو۟لَٰٓئِكُمْ أَمْ لَكُم بَرَآءَةٌ فِى الزُّبُرِ[43]

Akuffarukum khayrun min olaikum am lakum baraatun fee alzzuburi

Vos mécréants sont-ils meilleurs que ceux-là? Ou bien y a-t-il dans les Ecritures une immunité pour vous?

Are your Unbelievers, (O Quraish), better than they? Or have ye an immunity in the Sacred Books?

أَمْ يَقُولُونَ نَحْنُ جَمِيعٌ مُّنتَصِرٌ[44]

Am yaqooloona nahnu jameeAAun muntasirun

Ou bien ils disent: «Nous formons un groupe [fort] et nous vaincrons».

Or do they say: "We acting together can defend ourselves"?

سَيُهْزَمُ الْجَمْعُ وَيُوَلُّونَ الدُّبُرَ[45]

Sayuhzamu aljamAAu wayuwalloona alddubura

Leur rassemblement sera bientôt mis en déroute, et ils fuiront.

Soon will their multitude be put to flight, and they will show their backs.

بَلِ السَّاعَةُ مَوْعِدُهُمْ وَالسَّاعَةُ أَدْهَىٰ وَأَمَرُّ[46]

Bali alssaAAatu mawAAiduhum waalssaAAatu adha waamarru

L'Heure, plutôt, sera leur rendez-vous, et l'Heure sera plus terrible et plus amère.

Nay, the Hour (of Judgment) is the time promised them (for their full recompense): And that Hour will be most grievous and most bitter.

إِنَّ الْمُجْرِمِينَ فِى ضَلَٰلٍ وَسُعُرٍ[47]

Inna almujrimeena fee dalalin wasuAAurin

Les criminels sont certes, dans l'égarement et la folie.

Truly those in sin are the ones straying in mind, and mad.

يَوْمَ يُسْحَبُونَ فِى النَّارِ عَلَىٰ وُجُوهِهِمْ ذُوقُوا۟ مَسَّ سَقَرَ[48]

Yawma yushaboona fee alnnari AAala wujoohihim thooqoo massa saqara

Le jour où on les traînera dans le Feu sur leurs visages, (on leur dira): «Goûtez au contact de Saqar [la chaleur brûlante de l'Enfer]».

The Day they will be dragged through the Fire on their faces, (they will hear:) "Taste ye the touch of Hell!"

إِنَّا كُلَّ شَىْءٍ خَلَقْنَٰهُ بِقَدَرٍ[49]

Inna kulla shayin khalaqnahu biqadarin

Nous avons créé toute chose avec mesure,

Verily, all things have We created in proportion and measure.

وَمَآ أَمْرُنَآ إِلَّا وَٰحِدَةٌ كَلَمْحٍۭ بِالْبَصَرِ[50]

Wama amruna illa wahidatun kalamhin bialbasari

et Notre ordre est une seule [parole]; [il est prompt] comme un clin d'œil.

And Our Command is but a single (Act),- like the twinkling of an eye.

وَلَقَدْ أَهْلَكْنَآ أَشْيَاعَكُمْ فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍ[51]

Walaqad ahlakna ashyaAAakum fahal min muddakirin

En effet, nous avons fait périr des peuples semblables à vous. Y a-t-il quelqu'un pour s'en souvenir?

And (oft) in the past, have We destroyed gangs like unto you: then is there any that will receive admonition?

وَكُلُّ شَىْءٍ فَعَلُوهُ فِى الزُّبُرِ[52]

Wakullu shayin faAAaloohu fee alzzuburi

Et tout ce qu'ils ont fait est mentionné dans les registres,

All that they do is noted in (their) Books (of Deeds):

وَكُلُّ صَغِيرٍ وَكَبِيرٍ مُّسْتَطَرٌ[53]

Wakullu sagheerin wakabeerin mustatarun

et tout fait, petit et grand, est consigné.

Every matter, small and great, is on record.

إِنَّ الْمُتَّقِينَ فِى جَنَّٰتٍ وَنَهَرٍ[54]

Inna almuttaqeena fee jannatin wanaharin

Les pieux seront dans des Jardins et parmi des ruisseaux,

As to the Righteous, they will be in the midst of Gardens and Rivers,

فِى مَقْعَدِ صِدْقٍ عِندَ مَلِيكٍ مُّقْتَدِرٍۭ[55]

Fee maqAAadi sidqin AAinda maleekin muqtadirin

dans un séjour de vérité, auprès d'un Souverain Omnipotent.

In an Assembly of Truth, in the Presence of a Sovereign Omnipotent.
