بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ قُلْ أُوحِىَ إِلَىَّ أَنَّهُ اسْتَمَعَ نَفَرٌ مِّنَ الْجِنِّ فَقَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّا سَمِعْنَا قُرْءَانًا عَجَبًا[1]

Qul oohiya ilayya annahu istamaAAa nafarun mina aljinni faqaloo inna samiAAna quranan AAajaban

Dis: «Il m'a été révélé qu'un groupe de djinns prêtèrent l'oreille, puis dirent: «Nous avons certes entendu une Lecture [le Coran] merveilleuse,

Say: It has been revealed to me that a company of Jinns listened (to the Qur'an). They said, 'We have really heard a wonderful Recital!

يَهْدِىٓ إِلَى الرُّشْدِ فَـَٔامَنَّا بِهِۦ ۖ وَلَن نُّشْرِكَ بِرَبِّنَآ أَحَدًا[2]

Yahdee ila alrrushdi faamanna bihi walan nushrika birabbina ahadan

qui guide vers la droiture. Nous y avons cru, et nous n'associerons jamais personne à notre Seigneur.

'It gives guidance to the Right, and we have believed therein: we shall not join (in worship) any (gods) with our Lord.

وَأَنَّهُۥ تَعَٰلَىٰ جَدُّ رَبِّنَا مَا اتَّخَذَ صَٰحِبَةً وَلَا وَلَدًا[3]

Waannahu taAAala jaddu rabbina ma ittakhatha sahibatan wala waladan

En vérité notre Seigneur - que Sa grandeur soit exaltée - ne S'est donné ni compagne, ni enfant!

'And Exalted is the Majesty of our Lord: He has taken neither a wife nor a son.

وَأَنَّهُۥ كَانَ يَقُولُ سَفِيهُنَا عَلَى اللَّهِ شَطَطًا[4]

Waannahu kana yaqoolu safeehuna AAala Allahi shatatan

Notre insensé [Iblis] disait des extravagances contre Allah.

'There were some foolish ones among us, who used to utter extravagant lies against Allah;

وَأَنَّا ظَنَنَّآ أَن لَّن تَقُولَ الْإِنسُ وَالْجِنُّ عَلَى اللَّهِ كَذِبًا[5]

Waanna thananna an lan taqoola alinsu waaljinnu AAala Allahi kathiban

Et nous pensions que ni les humains ni les djinns ne sauraient jamais proférer de mensonge contre Allah.

'But we do think that no man or spirit should say aught that untrue against Allah.

وَأَنَّهُۥ كَانَ رِجَالٌ مِّنَ الْإِنسِ يَعُوذُونَ بِرِجَالٍ مِّنَ الْجِنِّ فَزَادُوهُمْ رَهَقًا[6]

Waannahu kana rijalun mina alinsi yaAAoothoona birijalin mina aljinni fazadoohum rahaqan

Or, il y avait parmi les humains, des mâles qui cherchaient protection auprès des mâles parmi les djinns mais cela ne fit qu'accroître leur détresse.

'True, there were persons among mankind who took shelter with persons among the Jinns, but they increased them in folly.

وَأَنَّهُمْ ظَنُّوا۟ كَمَا ظَنَنتُمْ أَن لَّن يَبْعَثَ اللَّهُ أَحَدًا[7]

Waannahum thannoo kama thanantum an lan yabAAatha Allahu ahadan

Et ils avaient pensé comme vous avez pensé qu'Allah ne ressusciterait jamais personne.

'And they (came to) think as ye thought, that Allah would not raise up any one (to Judgment).

وَأَنَّا لَمَسْنَا السَّمَآءَ فَوَجَدْنَٰهَا مُلِئَتْ حَرَسًا شَدِيدًا وَشُهُبًا[8]

Waanna lamasna alssamaa fawajadnaha muliat harasan shadeedan washuhuban

Nous avions frôlé le ciel et nous l'avions trouvé plein d'une forte garde et de bolides.

'And we pried into the secrets of heaven; but we found it filled with stern guards and flaming fires.

وَأَنَّا كُنَّا نَقْعُدُ مِنْهَا مَقَٰعِدَ لِلسَّمْعِ ۖ فَمَن يَسْتَمِعِ الْءَانَ يَجِدْ لَهُۥ شِهَابًا رَّصَدًا[9]

Waanna kunna naqAAudu minha maqaAAida lilssamAAi faman yastamiAAi alana yajid lahu shihaban rasadan

Nous y prenions place pour écouter. Mais quiconque prête l'oreille maintenant, trouve contre lui un bolide aux aguets.

'We used, indeed, to sit there in (hidden) stations, to (steal) a hearing; but any who listen now will find a flaming fire watching him in ambush.

وَأَنَّا لَا نَدْرِىٓ أَشَرٌّ أُرِيدَ بِمَن فِى الْأَرْضِ أَمْ أَرَادَ بِهِمْ رَبُّهُمْ رَشَدًا[10]

Waanna la nadree asharrun oreeda biman fee alardi am arada bihim rabbuhum rashadan

Nous ne savons pas si on veut du mal aux habitants de la terre ou si leur Seigneur veut les mettre sur le droit chemin.

'And we understand not whether ill is intended to those on earth, or whether their Lord (really) intends to guide them to right conduct.

وَأَنَّا مِنَّا الصَّٰلِحُونَ وَمِنَّا دُونَ ذَٰلِكَ ۖ كُنَّا طَرَآئِقَ قِدَدًا[11]

Waanna minna alssalihoona waminna doona thalika kunna taraiqa qidadan

Il y a parmi nous des vertueux et [d'autres] qui le sont moins: nous étions divisés en différentes sectes.

'There are among us some that are righteous, and some the contrary: we follow divergent paths.

وَأَنَّا ظَنَنَّآ أَن لَّن نُّعْجِزَ اللَّهَ فِى الْأَرْضِ وَلَن نُّعْجِزَهُۥ هَرَبًا[12]

Wanna thananna an lan nuAAjiza Allaha fee alardi walan nuAAjizahu haraban

Nous pensions bien que nous ne saurions jamais réduire Allah à l'impuissance sur la terre et que nous ne saurions jamais le réduire à l'impuissance en nous enfuyant.

'But we think that we can by no means frustrate Allah throughout the earth, nor can we frustrate Him by flight.

وَأَنَّا لَمَّا سَمِعْنَا الْهُدَىٰٓ ءَامَنَّا بِهِۦ ۖ فَمَن يُؤْمِنۢ بِرَبِّهِۦ فَلَا يَخَافُ بَخْسًا وَلَا رَهَقًا[13]

Waanna lamma samiAAna alhuda amanna bihi faman yumin birabbihi fala yakhafu bakhsan wala rahaqan

Et lorsque nous avons entendu le guide [le Coran], nous y avons cru, et quiconque croit en son Seigneur ne craint alors ni diminution de récompense ni oppression.

'And as for us, since we have listened to the Guidance, we have accepted it: and any who believes in his Lord has no fear, either of a short (account) or of any injustice.

وَأَنَّا مِنَّا الْمُسْلِمُونَ وَمِنَّا الْقَٰسِطُونَ ۖ فَمَنْ أَسْلَمَ فَأُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ تَحَرَّوْا۟ رَشَدًا[14]

Waanna minna almuslimoona waminna alqasitoona faman aslama faolaika taharraw rashadan

Il y a parmi nous les Musulmans, et il y en a les injustes [qui ont dévié]. Et ceux qui se sont convertis à l'Islam sont ceux qui ont cherché la droiture.

'Amongst us are some that submit their wills (to Allah), and some that swerve from justice. Now those who submit their wills - they have sought out (the path) of right conduct:

وَأَمَّا الْقَٰسِطُونَ فَكَانُوا۟ لِجَهَنَّمَ حَطَبًا[15]

Waama alqasitoona fakanoo lijahannama hataban

Et quant aux injustes, ils formeront le combustible de l'Enfer.

'But those who swerve,- they are (but) fuel for Hell-fire'-

وَأَلَّوِ اسْتَقَٰمُوا۟ عَلَى الطَّرِيقَةِ لَأَسْقَيْنَٰهُم مَّآءً غَدَقًا[16]

Waallawi istaqamoo AAala alttareeqati laasqaynahum maan ghadaqan

Et s'ils se maintenaient dans la bonne direction, Nous les aurions abreuvés, certes d'une eau abondante,

(And Allah's Message is): "If they (the Pagans) had (only) remained on the (right) Way, We should certainly have bestowed on them Rain in abundance.

لِّنَفْتِنَهُمْ فِيهِ ۚ وَمَن يُعْرِضْ عَن ذِكْرِ رَبِّهِۦ يَسْلُكْهُ عَذَابًا صَعَدًا[17]

Linaftinahum feehi waman yuAArid AAan thikri rabbihi yaslukhu AAathaban saAAadan

afin de les y éprouver. Et quiconque se détourne du rappel de son Seigneur, Il l'achemine vers un châtiment sans cesse croissant.

"That We might try them by that (means). But if any turns away from the remembrance of his Lord, He will cause him to undergo a severe Penalty.

وَأَنَّ الْمَسَٰجِدَ لِلَّهِ فَلَا تَدْعُوا۟ مَعَ اللَّهِ أَحَدًا[18]

Waanna almasajida lillahi fala tadAAoo maAAa Allahi ahadan

Les mosquées sont consacrées à Allah: n'invoquez donc personne avec Allah.

"And the places of worship are for Allah (alone): So invoke not any one along with Allah;

وَأَنَّهُۥ لَمَّا قَامَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ يَدْعُوهُ كَادُوا۟ يَكُونُونَ عَلَيْهِ لِبَدًا[19]

Waannahu lamma qama AAabdu Allahi yadAAoohu kadoo yakoonoona AAalayhi libadan

Et quand le serviteur d'Allah s'est mis debout pour L'invoquer, ils faillirent se ruer en masse sur lui.

"Yet when the Devotee of Allah stands forth to invoke Him, they just make round him a dense crowd."

قُلْ إِنَّمَآ أَدْعُوا۟ رَبِّى وَلَآ أُشْرِكُ بِهِۦٓ أَحَدًا[20]

Qul innama adAAoo rabbee wala oshriku bihi ahadan

Dis: «Je n'invoque que mon Seigneur et ne Lui associe personne».

Say: "I do no more than invoke my Lord, and I join not with Him any (false god)."

قُلْ إِنِّى لَآ أَمْلِكُ لَكُمْ ضَرًّا وَلَا رَشَدًا[21]

Qul innee la amliku lakum darran wala rashadan

Dis: «Je ne possède aucun moyen pour vous faire du mal, ni pour vous mettre sur le chemin droit».

Say: "It is not in my power to cause you harm, or to bring you to right conduct."

قُلْ إِنِّى لَن يُجِيرَنِى مِنَ اللَّهِ أَحَدٌ وَلَنْ أَجِدَ مِن دُونِهِۦ مُلْتَحَدًا[22]

Qul innee lan yujeeranee mina Allahi ahadun walan ajida min doonihi multahadan

Dis: «Vraiment, personne ne saura me protéger contre Allah; et jamais je ne trouverai de refuge en dehors de Lui.

Say: "No one can deliver me from Allah (If I were to disobey Him), nor should I find refuge except in Him,

إِلَّا بَلَٰغًا مِّنَ اللَّهِ وَرِسَٰلَٰتِهِۦ ۚ وَمَن يَعْصِ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥ فَإِنَّ لَهُۥ نَارَ جَهَنَّمَ خَٰلِدِينَ فِيهَآ أَبَدًا[23]

Illa balaghan mina Allahi warisalatihi waman yaAAsi Allaha warasoolahu fainna lahu nara jahannama khalideena feeha abadan

[Je ne puis que transmettre] une communication et des messages [émanant] d'Allah. Et quiconque désobéit à Allah et à Son Messager aura le feu de l'Enfer pour y demeurer éternellement.

"Unless I proclaim what I receive from Allah and His Messages: for any that disobey Allah and His Messenger,- for them is Hell: they shall dwell therein for ever."

حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا رَأَوْا۟ مَا يُوعَدُونَ فَسَيَعْلَمُونَ مَنْ أَضْعَفُ نَاصِرًا وَأَقَلُّ عَدَدًا[24]

Hatta itha raaw ma yooAAadoona fasayaAAlamoona man adAAafu nasiran waaqallu AAadadan

Puis, quand ils verront ce dont on les menaçait, ils sauront lesquels ont les secours les plus faibles et [lesquels] sont les moins nombreux.

At length, when they see (with their own eyes) that which they are promised,- then will they know who it is that is weakest in (his) helper and least important in point of numbers.

قُلْ إِنْ أَدْرِىٓ أَقَرِيبٌ مَّا تُوعَدُونَ أَمْ يَجْعَلُ لَهُۥ رَبِّىٓ أَمَدًا[25]

Qul in adree aqareebun ma tooAAadoona am yajAAalu lahu rabbee amadan

Dis: «Je ne sais pas si ce dont vous êtes menacés est proche, ou bien, si mon Seigneur va lui assigner un délai.

Say: "I know not whether the (Punishment) which ye are promised is near, or whether my Lord will appoint for it a distant term.

عَٰلِمُ الْغَيْبِ فَلَا يُظْهِرُ عَلَىٰ غَيْبِهِۦٓ أَحَدًا[26]

AAalimu alghaybi fala yuthhiru AAala ghaybihi ahadan

[C'est Lui] qui connaît le mystère. Il ne dévoile Son mystère à personne,

"He (alone) knows the Unseen, nor does He make any one acquainted with His Mysteries,-

إِلَّا مَنِ ارْتَضَىٰ مِن رَّسُولٍ فَإِنَّهُۥ يَسْلُكُ مِنۢ بَيْنِ يَدَيْهِ وَمِنْ خَلْفِهِۦ رَصَدًا[27]

Illa mani irtada min rasoolin fainnahu yasluku min bayni yadayhi wamin khalfihi rasadan

sauf à celui qu'Il agrée comme Messager et qu'Il fait précéder et suivre de gardiens vigilants,

"Except a messenger whom He has chosen: and then He makes a band of watchers march before him and behind him,

لِّيَعْلَمَ أَن قَدْ أَبْلَغُوا۟ رِسَٰلَٰتِ رَبِّهِمْ وَأَحَاطَ بِمَا لَدَيْهِمْ وَأَحْصَىٰ كُلَّ شَىْءٍ عَدَدًۢا[28]

LiyaAAlama an qad ablaghoo risalati rabbihim waahata bima ladayhim waahsa kulla shayin AAadadan

afin qu'Il sache s'ils ont bien transmis les messages de leur Seigneur. Il cerne (de Son savoir) ce qui est avec eux, et dénombre exactement toute chose.

"That He may know that they have (truly) brought and delivered the Messages of their Lord: and He surrounds (all the mysteries) that are with them, and takes account of every single thing."
