بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ يَٰٓأَيُّهَا الْمُدَّثِّرُ[1]

Ya ayyuha almuddaththiru

O, toi (Muhammad)! Le revêtu d'un manteau!

O thou wrapped up (in the mantle)!

قُمْ فَأَنذِرْ[2]

Qum faanthir

Lève-toi et avertis.

Arise and deliver thy warning!

وَرَبَّكَ فَكَبِّرْ[3]

Warabbaka fakabbir

Et de ton Seigneur, célèbre la grandeur.

And thy Lord do thou magnify!

وَثِيَابَكَ فَطَهِّرْ[4]

Wathiyabaka fatahhir

Et tes vêtements, purifie-les.

And thy garments keep free from stain!

وَالرُّجْزَ فَاهْجُرْ[5]

Waalrrujza faohjur

Et de tout péché, écarte-toi.

And all abomination shun!

وَلَا تَمْنُن تَسْتَكْثِرُ[6]

Wala tamnun tastakthiru

Et ne donne pas dans le but de recevoir davantage.

Nor expect, in giving, any increase (for thyself)!

وَلِرَبِّكَ فَاصْبِرْ[7]

Walirabbika faisbir

Et pour ton Seigneur, endure.

But, for thy Lord's (Cause), be patient and constant!

فَإِذَا نُقِرَ فِى النَّاقُورِ[8]

Faitha nuqira fee alnnaqoori

Quand on sonnera du Clairon,

Finally, when the Trumpet is sounded,

فَذَٰلِكَ يَوْمَئِذٍ يَوْمٌ عَسِيرٌ[9]

Fathalika yawmaithin yawmun AAaseerun

alors, ce jour-là sera un jour difficile,

That will be- that Day - a Day of Distress,-

عَلَى الْكَٰفِرِينَ غَيْرُ يَسِيرٍ[10]

AAala alkafireena ghayru yaseerin

pas facile pour les mécréants.

Far from easy for those without Faith.

ذَرْنِى وَمَنْ خَلَقْتُ وَحِيدًا[11]

Tharnee waman khalaqtu waheedan

Laisse-Moi avec celui que J'ai créé seul,

Leave Me alone, (to deal) with the (creature) whom I created (bare and) alone!-

وَجَعَلْتُ لَهُۥ مَالًا مَّمْدُودًا[12]

WajaAAaltu lahu malan mamdoodan

et à qui J'ai donné des biens étendus,

To whom I granted resources in abundance,

وَبَنِينَ شُهُودًا[13]

Wabaneena shuhoodan

et des enfants qui lui tiennent toujours compagnie,

And sons to be by his side!-

وَمَهَّدتُّ لَهُۥ تَمْهِيدًا[14]

Wamahhadtu lahu tamheedan

pour qui aussi J'ai aplani toutes difficultés

To whom I made (life) smooth and comfortable!

ثُمَّ يَطْمَعُ أَنْ أَزِيدَ[15]

Thumma yatmaAAu an azeeda

Cependant, il convoite [de Moi] que Je lui donne davantage.

Yet is he greedy-that I should add (yet more);-

كَلَّآ ۖ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ لِءَايَٰتِنَا عَنِيدًا[16]

Kalla innahu kana liayatina AAaneedan

Pas du tout! Car il reniait nos versets (le Coran) avec entêtement.

By no means! For to Our Signs he has been refractory!

سَأُرْهِقُهُۥ صَعُودًا[17]

Saorhiquhu saAAoodan

Je vais le contraindre à gravir une pente.

Soon will I visit him with a mount of calamities!

إِنَّهُۥ فَكَّرَ وَقَدَّرَ[18]

Innahu fakkara waqaddara

Il a réfléchi. Et il a décidé.

For he thought and he plotted;-

فَقُتِلَ كَيْفَ قَدَّرَ[19]

Faqutila kayfa qaddara

Qu'il périsse! Comme il a décidé!

And woe to him! How he plotted!-

ثُمَّ قُتِلَ كَيْفَ قَدَّرَ[20]

Thumma qutila kayfa qaddara

Encore une fois, qu'il périsse; comme il a décidé!

Yea, Woe to him; How he plotted!-

ثُمَّ نَظَرَ[21]

Thumma nathara

Ensuite, il a regardé.

Then he looked round;

ثُمَّ عَبَسَ وَبَسَرَ[22]

Thumma AAabasa wabasara

Et il s'est renfrogné et a durci son visage.

Then he frowned and he scowled;

ثُمَّ أَدْبَرَ وَاسْتَكْبَرَ[23]

Thumma adbara waistakbara

Ensuite il a tourné le dos et s'est enflé d'orgueil

Then he turned back and was haughty;

فَقَالَ إِنْ هَٰذَآ إِلَّا سِحْرٌ يُؤْثَرُ[24]

Faqala in hatha illa sihrun yutharu

Puis il a dit: «Ceci (le Coran) n'est que magie apprise

Then said he: "This is nothing but magic, derived from of old;

إِنْ هَٰذَآ إِلَّا قَوْلُ الْبَشَرِ[25]

In hatha illa qawlu albashari

ce n'est là que la parole d'un humain».

"This is nothing but the word of a mortal!"

سَأُصْلِيهِ سَقَرَ[26]

Saosleehi saqara

Je vais le brûler dans le Feu intense (Saqar).

Soon will I cast him into Hell-Fire!

وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا سَقَرُ[27]

Wama adraka ma saqaru

Et qui te dira ce qu'est Saqar?

And what will explain to thee what Hell-Fire is?

لَا تُبْقِى وَلَا تَذَرُ[28]

La tubqee wala tatharu

Il ne laisse rien et n'épargne rien;

Naught doth it permit to endure, and naught doth it leave alone!-

لَوَّاحَةٌ لِّلْبَشَرِ[29]

Lawwahatun lilbashari

Il brûle la peau et la noircit.

Darkening and changing the colour of man!

عَلَيْهَا تِسْعَةَ عَشَرَ[30]

AAalayha tisAAata AAashara

Ils sont dix neuf à y veiller.

Over it are Nineteen.

وَمَا جَعَلْنَآ أَصْحَٰبَ النَّارِ إِلَّا مَلَٰٓئِكَةً ۙ وَمَا جَعَلْنَا عِدَّتَهُمْ إِلَّا فِتْنَةً لِّلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ لِيَسْتَيْقِنَ الَّذِينَ أُوتُوا۟ الْكِتَٰبَ وَيَزْدَادَ الَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ إِيمَٰنًا ۙ وَلَا يَرْتَابَ الَّذِينَ أُوتُوا۟ الْكِتَٰبَ وَالْمُؤْمِنُونَ ۙ وَلِيَقُولَ الَّذِينَ فِى قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌ وَالْكَٰفِرُونَ مَاذَآ أَرَادَ اللَّهُ بِهَٰذَا مَثَلًا ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ يُضِلُّ اللَّهُ مَن يَشَآءُ وَيَهْدِى مَن يَشَآءُ ۚ وَمَا يَعْلَمُ جُنُودَ رَبِّكَ إِلَّا هُوَ ۚ وَمَا هِىَ إِلَّا ذِكْرَىٰ لِلْبَشَرِ[31]

Wama jaAAalna ashaba alnnari illa malaikatan wama jaAAalna AAiddatahum illa fitnatan lillatheena kafaroo liyastayqina allatheena ootoo alkitaba wayazdada allatheena amanoo eemanan wala yartaba allatheena ootoo alkitaba waalmuminoona waliyaqoola allatheena fee quloobihim maradun waalkafiroona matha arada Allahu bihatha mathalan kathalika yudillu Allahu man yashao wayahdee man yashao wama yaAAlamu junooda rabbika illa huwa wama hiya illa thikra lilbashari

Nous n'avons assigné comme gardiens du Feu que des Anges. Cependant, Nous n'en avons fixé le nombre que pour éprouver les mécréants, et aussi afin que ceux à qui le Livre a été apporté soient convaincus, et que croisse la foi de ceux qui croient, et que ceux à qui le Livre a été apporté et les croyants n'aient point de doute; et pour que ceux qui ont au cœur quelque maladie ainsi que les mécréants disent: «Qu'a donc voulu Allah par cette parabole?» C'est ainsi qu'Allah égare qui Il veut et guide qui Il veut. Nul ne connaît les armées de ton Seigneur, à part Lui. Et ce n'est là qu'un rappel pour les humains.

And We have set none but angels as Guardians of the Fire; and We have fixed their number only as a trial for Unbelievers,- in order that the People of the Book may arrive at certainty, and the Believers may increase in Faith,- and that no doubts may be left for the People of the Book and the Believers, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the Unbelievers may say, "What symbol doth Allah intend by this?" Thus doth Allah leave to stray whom He pleaseth, and guide whom He pleaseth: and none can know the forces of thy Lord, except He and this is no other than a warning to mankind.

كَلَّا وَالْقَمَرِ[32]

Kalla waalqamari

Non!... Par la lune!

Nay, verily: By the Moon,

وَالَّيْلِ إِذْ أَدْبَرَ[33]

Waallayli ith adbara

Et par la nuit quand elle se retire!

And by the Night as it retreateth,

وَالصُّبْحِ إِذَآ أَسْفَرَ[34]

Waalssubhi itha asfara

Et par l'aurore quand elle se découvre!

And by the Dawn as it shineth forth,-

إِنَّهَا لَإِحْدَى الْكُبَرِ[35]

Innaha laihda alkubari

[Saqar] est l'un des plus grands [malheurs]

This is but one of the mighty (portents),

نَذِيرًا لِّلْبَشَرِ[36]

Natheeran lilbashari

un avertissement, pour les humains.

A warning to mankind,-

لِمَن شَآءَ مِنكُمْ أَن يَتَقَدَّمَ أَوْ يَتَأَخَّرَ[37]

Liman shaa minkum an yataqaddama aw yataakhkhara

Pour qui d'entre vous, veut avancer ou reculer.

To any of you that chooses to press forward, or to follow behind;-

كُلُّ نَفْسٍۭ بِمَا كَسَبَتْ رَهِينَةٌ[38]

Kullu nafsin bima kasabat raheenatun

Toute âme est l'otage de ce qu'elle a acquis.

Every soul will be (held) in pledge for its deeds.

إِلَّآ أَصْحَٰبَ الْيَمِينِ[39]

Illa ashaba alyameeni

Sauf les gens de la droite (les élus):

Except the Companions of the Right Hand.

فِى جَنَّٰتٍ يَتَسَآءَلُونَ[40]

Fee jannatin yatasaaloona

dans des Jardins, ils s'interrogeront

(They will be) in Gardens (of Delight): they will question each other,

عَنِ الْمُجْرِمِينَ[41]

AAani almujrimeena

au sujet des criminels:

And (ask) of the Sinners:

مَا سَلَكَكُمْ فِى سَقَرَ[42]

Ma salakakum fee saqara

«Qu'est-ce qui vous a acheminés à Saqar?»

"What led you into Hell Fire?"

قَالُوا۟ لَمْ نَكُ مِنَ الْمُصَلِّينَ[43]

Qaloo lam naku mina almusalleena

Ils diront: «Nous n'étions pas de ceux qui faisaient la Salât,

They will say: "We were not of those who prayed;

وَلَمْ نَكُ نُطْعِمُ الْمِسْكِينَ[44]

Walam naku nutAAimu almiskeena

et nous ne nourrissions pas le pauvre,

"Nor were we of those who fed the indigent;

وَكُنَّا نَخُوضُ مَعَ الْخَآئِضِينَ[45]

Wakunna nakhoodu maAAa alkhaideena

et nous nous associions à ceux qui tenaient des conversations futiles,

"But we used to talk vanities with vain talkers;

وَكُنَّا نُكَذِّبُ بِيَوْمِ الدِّينِ[46]

Wakunna nukaththibu biyawmi alddeeni

et nous traitions de mensonge le jour de la Rétribution,

"And we used to deny the Day of Judgment,

حَتَّىٰٓ أَتَىٰنَا الْيَقِينُ[47]

Hatta atana alyaqeenu

jusqu'à ce que nous vînt la vérité évidente [la mort]».

"Until there came to us (the Hour) that is certain."

فَمَا تَنفَعُهُمْ شَفَٰعَةُ الشَّٰفِعِينَ[48]

Fama tanfaAAuhum shafaAAatu alshshafiAAeena

Ne leur profitera point donc, l'intercession des intercesseurs.

Then will no intercession of (any) intercessors profit them.

فَمَا لَهُمْ عَنِ التَّذْكِرَةِ مُعْرِضِينَ[49]

Fama lahum AAani alttathkirati muAArideena

Qu'ont-ils à se détourner du Rappel?

Then what is the matter with them that they turn away from admonition?-

كَأَنَّهُمْ حُمُرٌ مُّسْتَنفِرَةٌ[50]

Kaannahum humurun mustanfiratun

Ils sont comme des onagres épouvantés,

As if they were affrighted asses,

فَرَّتْ مِن قَسْوَرَةٍۭ[51]

Farrat min qaswaratin

s'enfuyant devant un lion.

Fleeing from a lion!

بَلْ يُرِيدُ كُلُّ امْرِئٍ مِّنْهُمْ أَن يُؤْتَىٰ صُحُفًا مُّنَشَّرَةً[52]

Bal yureedu kullu imriin minhum an yuta suhufan munashsharatan

Chacun d'eux voudrait plutôt qu'on lui apporte des feuilles tout étalées.

Forsooth, each one of them wants to be given scrolls (of revelation) spread out!

كَلَّا ۖ بَل لَّا يَخَافُونَ الْءَاخِرَةَ[53]

Kalla bal la yakhafoona alakhirata

Ah! Non! C'est plutôt qu'ils ne craignent pas l'au-delà.

By no means! But they fear not the Hereafter,

كَلَّآ إِنَّهُۥ تَذْكِرَةٌ[54]

Kalla innahu tathkiratun

Ah! Non! Ceci est vraiment un Rappel.

Nay, this surely is an admonition:

فَمَن شَآءَ ذَكَرَهُۥ[55]

Faman shaa thakarahu

Quiconque veut, qu'il se le rappelle.

Let any who will, keep it in remembrance!

وَمَا يَذْكُرُونَ إِلَّآ أَن يَشَآءَ اللَّهُ ۚ هُوَ أَهْلُ التَّقْوَىٰ وَأَهْلُ الْمَغْفِرَةِ[56]

Wama yathkuroona illa an yashaa Allahu huwa ahlu alttaqwa waahlu almaghfirati

Mais ils ne se rappelleront que si Allah veut. C'est Lui qui est Le plus digne d'être craint; et c'est Lui qui détient le pardon.

But none will keep it in remembrance except as Allah wills: He is the Lord of Righteousness, and the Lord of Forgiveness.
