بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ إِذَا الشَّمْسُ كُوِّرَتْ[1]

Itha alshshamsu kuwwirat

Quand le soleil sera obscurci,

When the sun (with its spacious light) is folded up;

وَإِذَا النُّجُومُ انكَدَرَتْ[2]

Waitha alnnujoomu inkadarat

et que les étoiles deviendront ternes,

When the stars fall, losing their lustre;

وَإِذَا الْجِبَالُ سُيِّرَتْ[3]

Waitha aljibalu suyyirat

et les montagnes mises en marche,

When the mountains vanish (like a mirage);

وَإِذَا الْعِشَارُ عُطِّلَتْ[4]

Waitha alAAisharu AAuttilat

et les chamelles à terme, négligées,

When the she-camels, ten months with young, are left untended;

وَإِذَا الْوُحُوشُ حُشِرَتْ[5]

Waitha alwuhooshu hushirat

et les bêtes farouches, rassemblées,

When the wild beasts are herded together (in the human habitations);

وَإِذَا الْبِحَارُ سُجِّرَتْ[6]

Waitha albiharu sujjirat

et les mers allumées,

When the oceans boil over with a swell;

وَإِذَا النُّفُوسُ زُوِّجَتْ[7]

Waitha alnnufoosu zuwwijat

et les âmes accouplées

When the souls are sorted out, (being joined, like with like);

وَإِذَا الْمَوْءُۥدَةُ سُئِلَتْ[8]

Waitha almawoodatu suilat

et qu'on demandera à la fillette enterrée vivante

When the female (infant), buried alive, is questioned -

بِأَىِّ ذَنۢبٍ قُتِلَتْ[9]

Biayyi thanbin qutilat

pour quel péché elle a été tuée.

For what crime she was killed;

وَإِذَا الصُّحُفُ نُشِرَتْ[10]

Waitha alssuhufu nushirat

Et quand les feuilles seront déployées,

When the scrolls are laid open;

وَإِذَا السَّمَآءُ كُشِطَتْ[11]

Waitha alssamao kushitat

et le ciel écorché

When the world on High is unveiled;

وَإِذَا الْجَحِيمُ سُعِّرَتْ[12]

Waitha aljaheemu suAAAAirat

et la fournaise attisée,

When the Blazing Fire is kindled to fierce heat;

وَإِذَا الْجَنَّةُ أُزْلِفَتْ[13]

Waitha aljannatu ozlifat

et le Paradis rapproché,

And when the Garden is brought near;-

عَلِمَتْ نَفْسٌ مَّآ أَحْضَرَتْ[14]

AAalimat nafsun ma ahdarat

chaque âme saura ce qu'elle a présenté.

(Then) shall each soul know what it has put forward.

فَلَآ أُقْسِمُ بِالْخُنَّسِ[15]

Fala oqsimu bialkhunnasi

Non!... Je jure par les planètes qui gravitent

So verily I call to witness the planets - that recede,

الْجَوَارِ الْكُنَّسِ[16]

Aljawari alkunnasi

qui courent et disparaissent

Go straight, or hide;

وَالَّيْلِ إِذَا عَسْعَسَ[17]

Waallayli itha AAasAAasa

par la nuit quand elle survient!

And the Night as it dissipates;

وَالصُّبْحِ إِذَا تَنَفَّسَ[18]

Waalssubhi itha tanaffasa

et par l'aube quand elle exhale son souffle!

And the Dawn as it breathes away the darkness;-

إِنَّهُۥ لَقَوْلُ رَسُولٍ كَرِيمٍ[19]

Innahu laqawlu rasoolin kareemin

Ceci [le Coran] est la parole d'un noble Messager,

Verily this is the word of a most honourable Messenger,

ذِى قُوَّةٍ عِندَ ذِى الْعَرْشِ مَكِينٍ[20]

Thee quwwatin AAinda thee alAAarshi makeenin

doué d'une grande force, et ayant un rang élevé auprès du Maître du Trône,

Endued with Power, with rank before the Lord of the Throne,

مُّطَاعٍ ثَمَّ أَمِينٍ[21]

MutaAAin thamma ameenin

obéi, là-haut, et digne de confiance.

With authority there, (and) faithful to his trust.

وَمَا صَاحِبُكُم بِمَجْنُونٍ[22]

Wama sahibukum bimajnoonin

Votre compagnon (Muhammad) n'est nullement fou;

And (O people!) your companion is not one possessed;

وَلَقَدْ رَءَاهُ بِالْأُفُقِ الْمُبِينِ[23]

Walaqad raahu bialofuqi almubeeni

il l'a effectivement vu (Gabriel), au clair horizon

And without doubt he saw him in the clear horizon.

وَمَا هُوَ عَلَى الْغَيْبِ بِضَنِينٍ[24]

Wama huwa AAala alghaybi bidaneenin

et il ne garde pas avarement pour lui-même ce qui lui a été révélé.

Neither doth he withhold grudgingly a knowledge of the Unseen.

وَمَا هُوَ بِقَوْلِ شَيْطَٰنٍ رَّجِيمٍ[25]

Wama huwa biqawli shaytanin rajeemin

Et ceci [le Coran] n'est point la parole d'un diable banni.

Nor is it the word of an evil spirit accursed.

فَأَيْنَ تَذْهَبُونَ[26]

Faayna tathhaboona

Où allez-vous donc?

When whither go ye?

إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا ذِكْرٌ لِّلْعَٰلَمِينَ[27]

In huwa illa thikrun lilAAalameena

Ceci n'est qu'un rappel pour l'univers,

Verily this is no less than a Message to (all) the Worlds:

لِمَن شَآءَ مِنكُمْ أَن يَسْتَقِيمَ[28]

Liman shaa minkum an yastaqeema

pour celui d'entre vous qui veut suivre le chemin droit.

(With profit) to whoever among you wills to go straight:

وَمَا تَشَآءُونَ إِلَّآ أَن يَشَآءَ اللَّهُ رَبُّ الْعَٰلَمِينَ[29]

Wama tashaoona illa an yashaa Allahu rabbu alAAalameena

Mais vous ne pouvez vouloir, que si Allah veut, [Lui], le Seigneur de l'Univers ;

But ye shall not will except as Allah wills,- the Cherisher of the Worlds.
