بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ وَالْفَجْرِ[1]

Waalfajri

Par l'Aube!

By the break of Day

وَلَيَالٍ عَشْرٍ[2]

Walayalin AAashrin

Et par les dix nuits!

By the Nights twice five;

وَالشَّفْعِ وَالْوَتْرِ[3]

WaalshshafAAi waalwatri

Par le pair et l'impair!

By the even and odd (contrasted);

وَالَّيْلِ إِذَا يَسْرِ[4]

Waallayli itha yasri

Et par la nuit quand elle s'écoule!

And by the Night when it passeth away;-

هَلْ فِى ذَٰلِكَ قَسَمٌ لِّذِى حِجْرٍ[5]

Hal fee thalika qasamun lithee hijrin

N'est-ce pas là un serment, pour un doué d'intelligence?

Is there (not) in these an adjuration (or evidence) for those who understand?

أَلَمْ تَرَ كَيْفَ فَعَلَ رَبُّكَ بِعَادٍ[6]

Alam tara kayfa faAAala rabbuka biAAadin

N'as-tu pas vu comment ton Seigneur a agi avec les 'Aad

Seest thou not how thy Lord dealt with the 'Ad (people),-

إِرَمَ ذَاتِ الْعِمَادِ[7]

Irama thati alAAimadi

[avec] Iram, [la cité] à la colonne remarquable,

Of the (city of) Iram, with lofty pillars,

الَّتِى لَمْ يُخْلَقْ مِثْلُهَا فِى الْبِلَٰدِ[8]

Allatee lam yukhlaq mithluha fee albiladi

dont jamais pareille ne fut construite parmi les villes?

The like of which were not produced in (all) the land?

وَثَمُودَ الَّذِينَ جَابُوا۟ الصَّخْرَ بِالْوَادِ[9]

Wathamooda allatheena jaboo alssakhra bialwadi

et avec les Thamûd qui taillaient le rocher dans la vallée?

And with the Thamud (people), who cut out (huge) rocks in the valley?-

وَفِرْعَوْنَ ذِى الْأَوْتَادِ[10]

WafirAAawna thee alawtadi

ainsi qu'avec Pharaon, l'homme aux épieux?

And with Pharaoh, lord of stakes?

الَّذِينَ طَغَوْا۟ فِى الْبِلَٰدِ[11]

Allatheena taghaw fee albiladi

Tous, étaient des gens qui transgressaient dans [leurs] pays,

(All) these transgressed beyond bounds in the lands,

فَأَكْثَرُوا۟ فِيهَا الْفَسَادَ[12]

Faaktharoo feeha alfasada

et y avaient commis beaucoup de désordre.

And heaped therein mischief (on mischief).

فَصَبَّ عَلَيْهِمْ رَبُّكَ سَوْطَ عَذَابٍ[13]

Fasabba AAalayhim rabbuka sawta AAathabin

Donc, ton Seigneur déversa sur eux un fouet du châtiment.

Therefore did thy Lord pour on them a scourge of diverse chastisements:

إِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَبِالْمِرْصَادِ[14]

Inna rabbaka labialmirsadi

Car ton Seigneur demeure aux aguets.

For thy Lord is (as a Guardian) on a watch-tower.

فَأَمَّا الْإِنسَٰنُ إِذَا مَا ابْتَلَىٰهُ رَبُّهُۥ فَأَكْرَمَهُۥ وَنَعَّمَهُۥ فَيَقُولُ رَبِّىٓ أَكْرَمَنِ[15]

Faamma alinsanu itha ma ibtalahu rabbuhu faakramahu wanaAAAAamahu fayaqoolu rabbee akramani

Quant à l'homme, lorsque son Seigneur l'éprouve en l'honorant et en le comblant de bienfaits, il dit: «Mon Seigneur m'a honoré».

Now, as for man, when his Lord trieth him, giving him honour and gifts, then saith he, (puffed up), "My Lord hath honoured me."

وَأَمَّآ إِذَا مَا ابْتَلَىٰهُ فَقَدَرَ عَلَيْهِ رِزْقَهُۥ فَيَقُولُ رَبِّىٓ أَهَٰنَنِ[16]

Waamma itha ma ibtalahu faqadara AAalayhi rizqahu fayaqoolu rabbee ahanani

Mais par contre, quand Il l'éprouve en lui restreignant sa subsistance, il dit: «Mon Seigneur m'a avili».

But when He trieth him, restricting his subsistence for him, then saith he (in despair), "My Lord hath humiliated me!"

كَلَّا ۖ بَل لَّا تُكْرِمُونَ الْيَتِيمَ[17]

Kalla bal la tukrimoona alyateema

Mais non! C'est vous plutôt, qui n'êtes pas généreux envers les orphelins;

Nay, nay! but ye honour not the orphans!

وَلَا تَحَٰٓضُّونَ عَلَىٰ طَعَامِ الْمِسْكِينِ[18]

Wala tahaddoona AAala taAAami almiskeeni

qui ne vous incitez pas mutuellement à nourrir le pauvre,

Nor do ye encourage one another to feed the poor!-

وَتَأْكُلُونَ التُّرَاثَ أَكْلًا لَّمًّا[19]

Watakuloona altturatha aklan lamman

qui dévorez l'héritage avec une avidité vorace,

And ye devour inheritance - all with greed,

وَتُحِبُّونَ الْمَالَ حُبًّا جَمًّا[20]

Watuhibboona almala hubban jamman

et aimez les richesses d'un amour sans bornes.

And ye love wealth with inordinate love!

كَلَّآ إِذَا دُكَّتِ الْأَرْضُ دَكًّا دَكًّا[21]

Kalla itha dukkati alardu dakkan dakkan

Prenez garde! Quand la terre sera complètement pulvérisée,

Nay! When the earth is pounded to powder,

وَجَآءَ رَبُّكَ وَالْمَلَكُ صَفًّا صَفًّا[22]

Wajaa rabbuka waalmalaku saffan saffan

et que ton Seigneur viendra ainsi que les Anges, rang par rang,

And thy Lord cometh, and His angels, rank upon rank,

وَجِا۟ىٓءَ يَوْمَئِذٍۭ بِجَهَنَّمَ ۚ يَوْمَئِذٍ يَتَذَكَّرُ الْإِنسَٰنُ وَأَنَّىٰ لَهُ الذِّكْرَىٰ[23]

Wajeea yawmaithin bijahannama yawmaithin yatathakkaru alinsanu waanna lahu alththikra

et que ce jour-là, on amènera l'Enfer; ce jour-là, l'homme se rappellera. Mais à quoi lui servira de se souvenir?

And Hell, that Day, is brought (face to face),- on that Day will man remember, but how will that remembrance profit him?

يَقُولُ يَٰلَيْتَنِى قَدَّمْتُ لِحَيَاتِى[24]

Yaqoolu ya laytanee qaddamtu lihayatee

Il dira: «Hélas! Que n'ai-je fait du bien pour ma vie future!

He will say: "Ah! Would that I had sent forth (good deeds) for (this) my (Future) Life!"

فَيَوْمَئِذٍ لَّا يُعَذِّبُ عَذَابَهُۥٓ أَحَدٌ[25]

Fayawmaithin la yuAAaththibu AAathabahu ahadun

Ce jour-là donc, nul ne saura châtier comme Lui châtie,

For, that Day, His Chastisement will be such as none (else) can inflict,

وَلَا يُوثِقُ وَثَاقَهُۥٓ أَحَدٌ[26]

Wala yoothiqu wathaqahu ahadun

et nul ne saura garrotter comme Lui garrotte.

And His bonds will be such as none (other) can bind.

يَٰٓأَيَّتُهَا النَّفْسُ الْمُطْمَئِنَّةُ[27]

Ya ayyatuha alnnafsu almutmainnatu

«O toi, âme apaisée,

(To the righteous soul will be said:) "O (thou) soul, in (complete) rest and satisfaction!

ارْجِعِىٓ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكِ رَاضِيَةً مَّرْضِيَّةً[28]

IrjiAAee ila rabbiki radiyatan mardiyyatan

retourne vers ton Seigneur, satisfaite et agréée;

"Come back thou to thy Lord,- well pleased (thyself), and well-pleasing unto Him!

فَادْخُلِى فِى عِبَٰدِى[29]

Faodkhulee fee AAibadee

entre donc parmi Mes serviteurs,

"Enter thou, then, among My devotees!

وَادْخُلِى جَنَّتِى[30]

Waodkhulee jannatee

et entre dans Mon Paradis».

"Yea, enter thou My Heaven!
