بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ وَالَّيْلِ إِذَا يَغْشَىٰ[1]

Waallayli itha yaghsha

Par la nuit quand elle enveloppe tout!

By the Night as it conceals (the light);

وَالنَّهَارِ إِذَا تَجَلَّىٰ[2]

Waalnnahari itha tajalla

Par le jour quand il éclaire!

By the Day as it appears in glory;

وَمَا خَلَقَ الذَّكَرَ وَالْأُنثَىٰٓ[3]

Wama khalaqa alththakara waalontha

Et par ce qu'Il a créé, mâle et femelle!

By (the mystery of) the creation of male and female;-

إِنَّ سَعْيَكُمْ لَشَتَّىٰ[4]

Inna saAAyakum lashatta

Vos efforts sont divergents.

Verily, (the ends) ye strive for are diverse.

فَأَمَّا مَنْ أَعْطَىٰ وَاتَّقَىٰ[5]

Faamma man aAAta waittaqa

Celui qui donne et craint (Allah)

So he who gives (in charity) and fears (Allah),

وَصَدَّقَ بِالْحُسْنَىٰ[6]

Wasaddaqa bialhusna

et déclare véridique la plus belle récompense

And (in all sincerity) testifies to the best,-

فَسَنُيَسِّرُهُۥ لِلْيُسْرَىٰ[7]

Fasanuyassiruhu lilyusra

Nous lui faciliterons la voie au plus grand bonheur.

We will indeed make smooth for him the path to Bliss.

وَأَمَّا مَنۢ بَخِلَ وَاسْتَغْنَىٰ[8]

Waamma man bakhila waistaghna

Et quant à celui qui est avare, se dispense (de l'adoration d'Allah),

But he who is a greedy miser and thinks himself self-sufficient,

وَكَذَّبَ بِالْحُسْنَىٰ[9]

Wakaththaba bialhusna

et traite de mensonge la plus belle récompense,

And gives the lie to the best,-

فَسَنُيَسِّرُهُۥ لِلْعُسْرَىٰ[10]

Fasanuyassiruhu lilAAusra

Nous lui faciliterons la voie à la plus grande difficulté,

We will indeed make smooth for him the path to Misery;

وَمَا يُغْنِى عَنْهُ مَالُهُۥٓ إِذَا تَرَدَّىٰٓ[11]

Wama yughnee AAanhu maluhu itha taradda

et à rien ne lui serviront ses richesses quand il sera jeté (au Feu).

Nor will his wealth profit him when he falls headlong (into the Pit).

إِنَّ عَلَيْنَا لَلْهُدَىٰ[12]

Inna AAalayna lalhuda

C'est à Nous, certes, de guider;

Verily We take upon Ourselves to guide,

وَإِنَّ لَنَا لَلْءَاخِرَةَ وَالْأُولَىٰ[13]

Wainna lana lalakhirata waaloola

à Nous appartient, certes, la vie dernière et la vie présente.

And verily unto Us (belong) the End and the Beginning.

فَأَنذَرْتُكُمْ نَارًا تَلَظَّىٰ[14]

Faanthartukum naran talaththa

Je vous ai donc avertis d'un Feu qui flambe

Therefore do I warn you of a Fire blazing fiercely;

لَا يَصْلَىٰهَآ إِلَّا الْأَشْقَى[15]

La yaslaha illa alashqa

où ne brûlera que le damné,

None shall reach it but those most unfortunate ones

الَّذِى كَذَّبَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ[16]

Allathee kaththaba watawalla

qui dément et tourne le dos;

Who give the lie to Truth and turn their backs.

وَسَيُجَنَّبُهَا الْأَتْقَى[17]

Wasayujannabuha alatqa

alors qu'en sera écarté le pieux,

But those most devoted to Allah shall be removed far from it,-

الَّذِى يُؤْتِى مَالَهُۥ يَتَزَكَّىٰ[18]

Allathee yutee malahu yatazakka

qui donne ses biens pour se purifier

Those who spend their wealth for increase in self-purification,

وَمَا لِأَحَدٍ عِندَهُۥ مِن نِّعْمَةٍ تُجْزَىٰٓ[19]

Wama liahadin AAindahu min niAAmatin tujza

et auprès de qui personne ne profite d'un bienfait intéressé,

And have in their minds no favour from anyone for which a reward is expected in return,

إِلَّا ابْتِغَآءَ وَجْهِ رَبِّهِ الْأَعْلَىٰ[20]

Illa ibtighaa wajhi rabbihi alaAAla

mais seulement pour la recherche de La Face de son Seigneur le Très Haut.

But only the desire to seek for the Countenance of their Lord Most High;

وَلَسَوْفَ يَرْضَىٰ[21]

Walasawfa yarda

Et certes, il sera bientôt satisfait!

And soon will they attain (complete) satisfaction.
