بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ اقْرَأْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ الَّذِى خَلَقَ[1]

Iqra biismi rabbika allathee khalaqa

Lis, au nom de ton Seigneur qui a créé,

Proclaim! (or read!) in the name of thy Lord and Cherisher, Who created-

خَلَقَ الْإِنسَٰنَ مِنْ عَلَقٍ[2]

Khalaqa alinsana min AAalaqin

qui a créé l'homme d'une adhérence.

Created man, out of a (mere) clot of congealed blood:

اقْرَأْ وَرَبُّكَ الْأَكْرَمُ[3]

Iqra warabbuka alakramu

Lis! Ton Seigneur est le Très Noble,

Proclaim! And thy Lord is Most Bountiful,-

الَّذِى عَلَّمَ بِالْقَلَمِ[4]

Allathee AAallama bialqalami

qui a enseigné par la plume [le calame],

He Who taught (the use of) the pen,-

عَلَّمَ الْإِنسَٰنَ مَا لَمْ يَعْلَمْ[5]

AAallama alinsana ma lam yaAAlam

a enseigné à l'homme ce qu'il ne savait pas.

Taught man that which he knew not.

كَلَّآ إِنَّ الْإِنسَٰنَ لَيَطْغَىٰٓ[6]

Kalla inna alinsana layatgha

Prenez-garde! Vraiment l'homme devient rebelle,

Nay, but man doth transgress all bounds,

أَن رَّءَاهُ اسْتَغْنَىٰٓ[7]

An raahu istaghna

dès qu'il estime qu'il peut se suffire à lui-même (à cause de sa richesse).

In that he looketh upon himself as self-sufficient.

إِنَّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ الرُّجْعَىٰٓ[8]

Inna ila rabbika alrrujAAa

Mais, c'est vers ton Seigneur qu'est le retour.

Verily, to thy Lord is the return (of all).

أَرَءَيْتَ الَّذِى يَنْهَىٰ[9]

Araayta allathee yanha

As-tu vu celui qui interdit

Seest thou one who forbids-

عَبْدًا إِذَا صَلَّىٰٓ[10]

AAabdan itha salla

à un serviteur d'Allah [Muhammad] de célébrer la Salât?

A votary when he (turns) to pray?

أَرَءَيْتَ إِن كَانَ عَلَى الْهُدَىٰٓ[11]

Araayta in kana AAala alhuda

Vois-tu s'il est sur la bonne voie,

Seest thou if he is on (the road of) Guidance?-

أَوْ أَمَرَ بِالتَّقْوَىٰٓ[12]

Aw amara bialttaqwa

ou s'il ordonne la piété?

Or enjoins Righteousness?

أَرَءَيْتَ إِن كَذَّبَ وَتَوَلَّىٰٓ[13]

Araayta in kaththaba watawalla

Vois-tu s'il dément et tourne le dos?

Seest thou if he denies (Truth) and turns away?

أَلَمْ يَعْلَم بِأَنَّ اللَّهَ يَرَىٰ[14]

Alam yaAAlam bianna Allaha yara

Ne sait-il pas que vraiment Allah voit?

Knoweth he not that Allah doth see?

كَلَّا لَئِن لَّمْ يَنتَهِ لَنَسْفَعًۢا بِالنَّاصِيَةِ[15]

Kalla lain lam yantahi lanasfaAAan bialnnasiyati

Mais non! S'il ne cesse pas, Nous le saisirons certes, par le toupet,

Let him beware! If he desist not, We will drag him by the forelock,-

نَاصِيَةٍ كَٰذِبَةٍ خَاطِئَةٍ[16]

Nasiyatin kathibatin khatiatin

le toupet d'un menteur, d'un pécheur.

A lying, sinful forelock!

فَلْيَدْعُ نَادِيَهُۥ[17]

FalyadAAu nadiyahu

Qu'il appelle donc son assemblée.

Then, let him call (for help) to his council (of comrades):

سَنَدْعُ الزَّبَانِيَةَ[18]

SanadAAu alzzabaniyata

Nous appellerons les gardiens [de l'Enfer].

We will call on the angels of punishment (to deal with him)!

كَلَّا لَا تُطِعْهُ وَاسْجُدْ وَاقْتَرِب ۩[19]

Kalla la tutiAAhu waosjud waiqtarib

Non! Ne lui obéis pas; mais prosterne-toi et rapproche-toi.

Nay, heed him not: But bow down in adoration, and bring thyself the closer (to Allah)!
