بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ أَلْهَىٰكُمُ التَّكَاثُرُ[1]

Alhakumu alttakathuru

La course aux richesses vous distrait,

The mutual rivalry for piling up (the good things of this world) diverts you (from the more serious things),

حَتَّىٰ زُرْتُمُ الْمَقَابِرَ[2]

Hatta zurtumu almaqabira

jusqu'à ce que vous visitiez les tombes.

Until ye visit the graves.

كَلَّا سَوْفَ تَعْلَمُونَ[3]

Kalla sawfa taAAlamoona

Mais non! Vous saurez bientôt!

But nay, ye soon shall know (the reality).

ثُمَّ كَلَّا سَوْفَ تَعْلَمُونَ[4]

Thumma kalla sawfa taAAlamoona

(Encore une fois)! Vous saurez bientôt!

Again, ye soon shall know!

كَلَّا لَوْ تَعْلَمُونَ عِلْمَ الْيَقِينِ[5]

Kalla law taAAlamoona AAilma alyaqeeni

Sûrement! Si vous saviez de science certaine.

Nay, were ye to know with certainty of mind, (ye would beware!)

لَتَرَوُنَّ الْجَحِيمَ[6]

Latarawunna aljaheema

Vous verrez, certes, la Fournaise.

Ye shall certainly see Hell-Fire!

ثُمَّ لَتَرَوُنَّهَا عَيْنَ الْيَقِينِ[7]

Thumma latarawunnaha AAayna alyaqeeni

Puis, vous la verrez certes, avec l'œil de la certitude.

Again, ye shall see it with certainty of sight!

ثُمَّ لَتُسْـَٔلُنَّ يَوْمَئِذٍ عَنِ النَّعِيمِ[8]

Thumma latusalunna yawmaithin AAani alnnaAAeemi

Puis, assurément, vous serez interrogés, ce jour-là, sur les délices.

Then, shall ye be questioned that Day about the joy (ye indulged in!).
