History Of World Cup

History Of FIFA World Cup

Estadio Centenario, the location of the first World Cup final in 1930 in Montevideo, Uruguay

The FIFA World Cup, often simply the World Cup, is an international association football competition contested by the senior men's national teams of the members of Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), the sport's global governing body. The championship has been awarded every four years since the inaugural tournament in 1930, except in 1942 and 1946 when it was not held because of theSecond World War. The current champions are Spain, who won the 2010 tournament in South Africa.

The current format of the tournament involves 32 teams competing for the title at venues within the host nation(s) over a period of about a month; this phase is often called the World Cup Finals. A qualification phase, which currently takes place over the preceding three years, is used to determine which teams qualify for the tournament together with the host nation(s).

The 19 World Cup tournaments have been won by eight different national teams.Brazil have won five times, and they are the only team to have played in every tournament. The other World Cup winners are Italy, with four titles; West Germany, with three titles; Argentina and inaugural winners Uruguay, with two titles each; and England, France, and Spain, with one title each.

The World Cup is among the world's most widely viewed sporting events; an estimated 715.1 million people watched thefinal match of the 2006 FIFA World Cup held in Germany.

The next three World Cups will be hosted by 2014, Russia in 2018, and Qatar 2022.

Italian Brunch Torte Recipe

Ingredients

  • 2 tubes (8 ounces each) refrigerated crescent rolls, divided
  • 1 teaspoon olive oil
  • 1 package (6 ounces) fresh baby spinach
  • 1 cup sliced fresh mushrooms
  • 7 Eggland's Best Eggs
  • 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning
  • 1/8 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/2 pound thinly sliced deli ham
  • 1/2 pound thinly sliced hard salami
  • 1/2 pound sliced provolone cheese
  • 2 jars (12 ounces each) roasted sweet red peppers, drained, sliced and patted dry

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 350°. Place a greased 9-in. springform pan on a double thickness of heavy-duty foil (about 18 in. square). Securely wrap foil around pan. Unroll one tube of crescent dough and separate into triangles. Press onto bottom of prepared pan to form a crust, sealing seams well. Bake 10-15 minutes or until set.
  2. Meanwhile, in a large skillet, heat oil over medium-high heat. Add spinach and mushrooms; cook and stir until mushrooms are tender. Drain on several layers of paper towels, blotting well. In a large bowl, whisk six eggs, Parmesan cheese, Italian seasoning and pepper.
  3. Layer crust with half of the ham, salami, provolone cheese, red peppers and spinach mixture. Pour half of the egg mixture over the top. Repeat layers; top with remaining egg mixture.
  4. On a work surface, unroll and separate remaining crescent dough into triangles. Press together to form a circle and seal seams; place over filling. Whisk remaining egg; brush over dough.
  5. Bake, uncovered, 1 to 1-1/4 hours or until a thermometer reads 160°, covering loosely with foil if needed to prevent overbrowning. Carefully loosen sides from pan with a knife; remove rim from pan. Let stand 20 minutes. Yield: 12 servings.
