Fret Heat

Download

Ever wonder how much your favorite guitarist relies on the pentatonic scale? Or whether they tend to avoid the top strings? Fretboard Heatmaps is a data visualization experiment based on guitar tablature, intending to give you some insight into exactly those types of questions. We map the Fretboards of popular guitar players, so that you can compare the way they use the guitar neck. The web version was featured on The Guardian DataBlog's Show and Tell (http://www.theguardian.com/news/datablog/interactive/2013/may/28/frets-guitar-artists) This mobile version includes many more artists, for a total of 36, covering many genres (jazz, metal, fusion, classic rock, and blues). Keep in mind, this is based on guitar tabs. It may be true that tablature on the internet is often not perfectly accurate, or only transcribes part of the song. Some artist may play in other tunings, but for the purposes of seeing where their fingers spend the most time, that doesn't matter to us.
