About Kochi

Kochi, also known as Cochin, is a major port city on the south west coast of India by the Arabian Sea and is part of the district of Ernakulam in the state of Kerala.

The city of Kochi (pop. 601,574) is the second largest and most densely populated city in the state and is part of an extended metropolitan region (pop. 2.1 million), which is the largest urban agglomeration in Kerala. Kochi city is also a part of the Greater Cochin region and is classified as a Tier-II city by the Government of India.

History

Kingdom of Cochin was a late medieval Hindu kingdom and later Princely State on the Malabar Coast, South India.

Geography

Kochi lies at the northern end of a narrow neck of land, about 19 km long and less than 1.6 km wide in many places, and is separated from the mainland by inlets from the Arabian sea and by the estuaries of rivers draining from the Western Ghats. As a result, Kochi is a natural harbour.

Culture

Kochi has a diverse, multicultural, and secular community consisting of Hindus, Christians, Muslims, Jains, Sikhs, Konkanis and Buddhists among other denominations.

The people are also increasingly fashion-conscious, often deviating from the traditional Kerala wear to western casual clothing.
