Offtrail

Offtrail runs in the background and collects GPS fixes into a trail. The current trail is automatically saved to the "local storage" so that it persists between application and phone restarts. Trail data is simplified with the Ramer-Douglas-Peucker algorithm to minimize trail data size.

You can send a trail as an e-mail, Offtrail attaches the trail data in multiple standard formats:

• KML (ZIP-compressed KMZ variant)
• GPX (ZIP-compressed)

Trail files can be viewed with multiple applications, and also on the web e.g. at gpsvisualizer.com (KML/KMZ/GPX) or OpenStreetMap (GPX).

Tips:

• GPS tracking has an impact on battery life, so check your battery level once in a while.
• To save battery, put Offtrail in the background by pressing the Home key and then locking the screen. If you lock directly with Offtrail on top, Offtrail may not get a "page hidden" event on some Firefox OS versions and will keep on updating the UI at a small battery cost.
• Close Offtrail using the "Exit" button to avoid losing the most recent GPS fixes. Offtrail autosaves once a minute so if you close forcibly, you can lose up to 1 minute of fixes.
• Offtrail currently keeps only one trail at a time. When done, send the current trail through e-mail and clear the trail by pressing the "Clear" button twice quickly in succession. This behavior is a safeguard against accidental deletion.
• The average speed shown is calculated over the last active trail segment. If you wish to start a new trail segment forcibly, simply exit and restart the application.
